Collected Mashups Vol. 4b: The Shitcase Cinema Remixes

My musical collaboration with Johnny Shitcase and Professor Bruce of Shitcase Cinema began in 2009. I don't recall the precise circumstances of our initial contact, but I think it had something to do with my search for Youtube footage of Donald Sutherland's notorious eye-roll scene in Virus, the sci-fi-horror flick of 1999, stumbling across a Shitcase Cinema review of the film in the process, and consequently watching a whole bunch of Shitcase. I absolutely love(d) their humorous, do-it-yourself approach to reviewing (mainly) bad movies, which showcased (and still features) John's well-written scripts and thick Yorkshire accent, Professor Bruce's "science" segments and role as comic foil, their silly over-the-top skits often involving a cast of characters such as Caveman Wayne, a heavy dose of Pythonesque absurdity, and (of course) a propensity for creative cursing.
DOWNLOAD (alternate link in "comments").

This led me to contact Johnny Shitcase, and after some friendly back-and-forth messages, I offered (or agreed, I don't remember) to do some mashups of Professor Bruce's already perfect theme song with some soundtrack tunes. Over the course of the next couple years, I did a total of seven short Shitcase Cinema Theme Song mashups/remixes, six of which were featured in various Shitcase reviews. At some point, with the Google takeover of Youtube and its private message system, John going on a long trip overseas, and me having various other things on my plate, our collaboration petered out, so I thought I'd take this occasion to duly celebrate it with this collection. And what better way to introduce uninitiated not-I fans to Shitcase Cinema than with a series of Shitcase videos that feature my little remixes? (See end of post.) DOWNLOAD (alternate link in "comments").

Collected Mashups Vol. 4b: The Shitcase Cinema Remixes is a mini album (only 36 MB) intended for die-hard not-I collectors and Shitcase enthusiasts, which includes the following mini-maxi mix of all the remixes:

Collected Mashups Vol. 4: Sleeper

Good Morning! The next installment of the Collected Mashups series has finally arrived! I've called this collection "Sleeper" because of: 1.) "Sleeper (noun): someone or something unpromising or unnoticed that suddenly attains prominence or value"; 2.) Klaudia Gottwald's portrait of me featured on the cover; and 3.) My love of deep sleep whenever I can get it. Download itDisc 1 Disc 2 (alternate links in "comments").

These mashups are all from 2009. This was a great year for me in terms of my development and new place in the mashup game. My previous work was finally getting recognized, as was my new stuff. I performed at Bootie Munich and at Bootie Vienna and played out several of the mashes featured on this album live, including "Nanafushi Bulletproof" and "Chop Synergy Dare," which are being released here for the first time. I ventured back into the 80s with the popular "Spin Shout Right Round!" and "He Got Scream," and explored uncharted territory with epic jams like "MORE Cowbell," "100 Million Butterflies," and "Raising The Small Things In Life." My mashups had decisively shifted to the melodic. I still showed love for hip-hop, but also for the pioneering adventures that had come to define my style (e.g. "Three Skies A Lady," "Phantom Sanctuary").

Despite my occasional pop stylings and apparent pangs "to be liked", I think most of these mashups are utterly uncompromising, and all the better for it.

Don't make music you think people want to hear, make music you want to hear!

Love, DJ not-I

P.S.i I couldn't decide how to order these mashups, so I (mostly) arranged them according to increasing beats per minute (BPMs).
P.S.ii Don't "sleep on" Disc 2. It's not filler and includes two previously unreleased tracks.

Collected Mashups Vol. 2: The Videos

Following up on my last post, here are all the extant videos for Collected Mashups Vol. 2a and Vol. 2b (no videos have been produced for Vol. 2c). I made two of these myself, but most were made by people who liked my stuff enough to make fan videos and/or use them as soundtracks to whatever cool things they were doing, and were decent enough to credit them. To me, there is no greater compliment, and I have duly credited these video-makers.

All of the featured mashups are available for free download as part of the albums in the links above or individually via hearthis.at.

Enjoy & Have Fun! Love, DJ not-I

All of the original audio mashups are downloadable as part of the Collected Mashups Vol. 1 double-album or individually at hearthis.at. Now let's get this party started!

Collected Mashups Vol. 3b & 3c: The Shinobi & Enso Pop EPs

In addition to the mashup "singles" I released in 2008 (available here), I produced two special projects as mini-albums: The Shinobi EP and The Enso Pop EP. The former featured seven mashups utilizing instrumentals by artists signed to one of my favorite labels (Ninja Tune), while the latter demonstrated my ability to make (more-or-less) straight "pop mashups" whenever I felt like doing so. Despite having divergent intentions, I believe both EPs share a common thread or signature (in the music, not just the artwork) that makes you say, "These are DJ not-I mashups."

This is one of the reasons I've compiled both EPs as a single download in volumes 3b and 3c of the Collected Mashup Series. Enjoy!

Love, DJ not-I.

Collected Mashups Vol. 3a: Of Love, Hate and Change

2008 was a watershed in many respects: The mashups of this collection mirror both the anxious global mood before the U.S. elections and the sense of measured optimism that arose afterward, even in the midst of an economic crisis of vast proportions. The long, dark (inter-)national nightmare of the Cheney-Bush regime's reign of terror was finally over. (Unfortunately, though perhaps predictably, the Obama administration has continued, and even expanded, many of the same policies.)

Several of these mashups are overtly and unabashedly political. They range from Eminem's and The Beatles' unintentional (and Reverend Wright's explicit) advocacy of Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton during the primaries ("(W)right America") to the conspiracy theories of Immortal Technique ("Infra-stition"), Jedi Mind Tricks ("Heavy Metal Amour"), and M.I.A. ("Under Paper Planes"), to the full-on partisan endorsement of Obama against McCain/Palin and the unprecedented dirtiness of their campaign ("Change The Hate"). Even one of the 'dance' tracks is infused with politics ("Vino Hip Vino Hop"). I had made political mashes before, but perhaps never with such passion and intensity.

Yet this album also features several non-political tracks expressing, among other things: love (the Bo Diddley Tribute Mixes), optimism ("Just Might Be Big Love," produced after the elections), awareness of death ("6 Feet Under The Bitter End"), rock 'n' roll ("Freaky Undone Hombre"), and just good, clean fun ("Smells Like Futurama" and "Rihanna's Troubled Bees").

Many of these mashups also gave me the opportunity to utilize and juxtapose more diverse sources than previously, including blues, drum & bass, indie, and nu metal. In this collection, I've included a few first versions and alternate mixes. I believe this collection is representative of my work's diversity and is quite a decent album too (hence the cheeky cover). I hope you agree. Enjoy! Love, not-I

Collected Mashups Vol. 2c: El Álbum Latino

This collection consists of single versions of all the mashups featured on not-i-podcast-02: la edición latina as well as a few Latin-themed bonus tracks. It is the last installment in Collected Mashups Vol. 2 (those made in 2007).

In accordance with the title and theme, much of the lyrical content is in Spanish, yet these juxtapositions are quite eclectic and roughly half of them mix English-language lyrics with Latin-flavored instrumentals - many of them include both languages. Hence, you don't have to speak Spanish to enjoy this album. In fact, I don't know much Spanish myself, but the highly melodic character of the Latina/Latino vocals featured here (including the reggaeton "rapping") suggested several fascinating combinations, which along with many of the tracks on Vol. 2a, marked my final departure from strictly hip-hop blends into truly melodic mashup territory.

In this collection you will hear top reggaeton artists like Tego Calderón or Voltio sing-song-rapping over jazz and dub reggae as well as Latin singers such as Don Omar, Notch, or Orquídea Negra of L.D.A. soaring over Jean-Michel Jarre and The Police. You will also hear underground rappers J3hst (UK) or The Perceptionists (US) spitting poison over slick-and-smooth-as-silk reggaeton instrumentals as well as Tweet waxing R&B-style over Santana and soul queen Jill Scott testifying over the Latin-heavy drums of Swizz Beatz. There is also a bit of The Simpsons en Español.

Variety is key here, yet regardless of genre, language or style, all of these mashups have a decidedly Latin flavor and, perhaps because of it, all of them are quite danceable. ¡Pásalo bien! Love, DJ not-I.

Collected Mashups Vol. 2b: The Sohei Album Sampler

The Sōhei Album Sampler - "Hip-Hop Mash Attack." Full of vigor, hip-hop sensibilities, and "fighting spirit" and produced almost entirely from vinyl sources, this was my first attempt at a proper album, which turned out as an EP-length "album sampler." Started in late 2006 and released in January 2007, these songs actually preceded those of Collected Mashups Vol. 2a. I am still quite proud of them. The sampler includes the internet hits: "Fergie Must Go," "Pass The Chunfly," and "Stranglehold Friday".

Originally, I had planned to release an entire CD-length work called The Sōhei Album. Many of the songs I had intended to include were gradually released as singles, though several unreleased tracks in various states of completion still remain on my old hard drive . The Collected Mashups series will eventually feature them as well, perhaps as the last volume.

I offer this long-unavailable EP as Vol. 2b in the series. I hope you enjoy it!

Love, not-I.

Collected Mashups Vol. 2a: Year Of The Pig

The second volume of the Collected Mashups, this 2007 collection documents my expansive progression from the hip-hop-heavy blends of 2004-2006 to melodic/harmonic juxtapositions involving a wider array of genres, including electro, dream-pop, and dub/reggae.

Featuring "Trans Planet Insomnia," "Dr. C's Sexual Healing," "Dracula's 77 Nation Army," "F.E.A.R. Of Karma," and "Fool Of Mergen," as well as several long-unavailable tracks, this set is bound to please your ears.

In a departure from Vol. 1, I've abandoned chronology (exact release dates) and arranged the songs in listening order as a proper album. Enjoy! Love, ~I
