Collected Mashups Vol. 2c: El Álbum Latino

This collection consists of single versions of all the mashups featured on not-i-podcast-02: la edición latina as well as a few Latin-themed bonus tracks. It is the last installment in Collected Mashups Vol. 2 (those made in 2007).

In accordance with the title and theme, much of the lyrical content is in Spanish, yet these juxtapositions are quite eclectic and roughly half of them mix English-language lyrics with Latin-flavored instrumentals - many of them include both languages. Hence, you don't have to speak Spanish to enjoy this album. In fact, I don't know much Spanish myself, but the highly melodic character of the Latina/Latino vocals featured here (including the reggaeton "rapping") suggested several fascinating combinations, which along with many of the tracks on Vol. 2a, marked my final departure from strictly hip-hop blends into truly melodic mashup territory.

In this collection you will hear top reggaeton artists like Tego Calderón or Voltio sing-song-rapping over jazz and dub reggae as well as Latin singers such as Don Omar, Notch, or Orquídea Negra of L.D.A. soaring over Jean-Michel Jarre and The Police. You will also hear underground rappers J3hst (UK) or The Perceptionists (US) spitting poison over slick-and-smooth-as-silk reggaeton instrumentals as well as Tweet waxing R&B-style over Santana and soul queen Jill Scott testifying over the Latin-heavy drums of Swizz Beatz. There is also a bit of The Simpsons en Español.

Variety is key here, yet regardless of genre, language or style, all of these mashups have a decidedly Latin flavor and, perhaps because of it, all of them are quite danceable. ¡Pásalo bien! Love, DJ not-I.

Archive Series Vol. IV: not-i-podcast-02 - La Edición Latina/Latin Edition

My second podcast ever, produced in 2007, "la edición latina" pays respects to my (grand-)mother's and my roots with an eclectic blend of Latin American and Latin-influenced music including hip-hop, reggaeton, Chicano rock, and muchos mash-ups* made especially for the show.

Bursting with spicy flavors from Mesoamerica and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean (especially from California, Mexico and Puerto Rico), and seasoned with ingredients from as far afield as New York and London, this sonic fiesta has satisfied diverse musical taste buds over the years and become one of my most popular podcast episodes.

This special edition has been re-rendered into highest-quality VBR mp3s from the original wave file and been cut into individual tracks so you can skip to and replay your favorite tracks. Choose a streaming and/or download option below.

¡Buen provecho! Love, DJ not-I

Collected Mashups Vol. 2b: The Sohei Album Sampler

The Sōhei Album Sampler - "Hip-Hop Mash Attack." Full of vigor, hip-hop sensibilities, and "fighting spirit" and produced almost entirely from vinyl sources, this was my first attempt at a proper album, which turned out as an EP-length "album sampler." Started in late 2006 and released in January 2007, these songs actually preceded those of Collected Mashups Vol. 2a. I am still quite proud of them. The sampler includes the internet hits: "Fergie Must Go," "Pass The Chunfly," and "Stranglehold Friday".

Originally, I had planned to release an entire CD-length work called The Sōhei Album. Many of the songs I had intended to include were gradually released as singles, though several unreleased tracks in various states of completion still remain on my old hard drive . The Collected Mashups series will eventually feature them as well, perhaps as the last volume.

I offer this long-unavailable EP as Vol. 2b in the series. I hope you enjoy it!

Love, not-I.

Collected Mashups Vol. 2a: Year Of The Pig

The second volume of the Collected Mashups, this 2007 collection documents my expansive progression from the hip-hop-heavy blends of 2004-2006 to melodic/harmonic juxtapositions involving a wider array of genres, including electro, dream-pop, and dub/reggae.

Featuring "Trans Planet Insomnia," "Dr. C's Sexual Healing," "Dracula's 77 Nation Army," "F.E.A.R. Of Karma," and "Fool Of Mergen," as well as several long-unavailable tracks, this set is bound to please your ears.

In a departure from Vol. 1, I've abandoned chronology (exact release dates) and arranged the songs in listening order as a proper album. Enjoy! Love, ~I

Archive Series Vol. III: not-I-podcast-01 - Premiere Hip-Hop Edition (special re-release)

This is a special re-release* of my first podcast, recorded back in 2007 (first released via Podomatic) and featuring quality hip-hop of the conscious, electronic, neo-old-school, non-commerical and underground varieties. It also includes three of my blends/mash-ups, all of which will re-appear on the imminent release of my Collected Mashups Vol. II.

This was mixed live with two turntables, one CD-player and a mixer from mostly vinyl sources. It being my first podcast, I naturally made a few beginner's mistakes, but listening again, I'm firmly convinced it stands the test of time, most especially because the music featured here more than adequately passes that test.

I call this a *special re-release because: 1.) It's been re-rendered into highest-quality VBR mp3s from the original wave file; and 2.) It's been cut into individual tracks so you can skip to and replay your favorite tracks.

Never Call You Bitch Again (Evolution) (video)

This is a video I've just put together as the last promo for Collected Mashups Vol. 1, showcasing an underground classic of mine: Tupac Shakur vs. Cinematic Orchestra featuring Fontella Bass - "Never Call You Bitch Again (Evolution)".

This video was almost finished when the infamous Tupac "hologram" made an appearance at Coachella, but remained on my hard drive for quite a while, perhaps as a sub-conscious protest. Most of the video features images of singer Heidi Vogel, who toured extensively with Cinematic Orchestra, but the original vocals (and audio) are by blues/jazz legend Fontella Bass, who makes a few brief cameos towards the end of the song.

Irie 5+5 EP (Collected Mashups Sampler One)

With over 200 mashups to my name and my intention to release a new CD-length volume every month or two, the Collected Mashups Series is going to take a while to release, especially with the special bonus tunes (remixes, remasters, instrumentals, and previously unreleased stuff) I plan to include along the way.

Due to popular demand, and with many of my most well-known mashups currently off-line, I've decided to also release a few Collected Mashups Series samplers (EPs), which include tracks from my entire 2004-2011 "oeuvre," assembled according to specific themes. This is the first such sampler, and since summer has finally arrived, I was inspired last weekend to collect ten of my reggae/dub/dancehall mashups in one EP. Have fun and stay irie!

Love, ~I
