Crumplstock 1-2-3 (2015-2016)

[Note: I just realized I haven't posted anything here for almost a year. With the corporate dinosaurs (especially UMG) recently flailing their tails again at mashups and unofficial remixes, destroying Soundcloud in the process and now attacking Hearthis, I decided it's wise to keep this blog updated in case my Hearthis account gets whacked too. So without further ado...]

Like the original Crumplebury, Crumplstock 1, 2, and 3 were gigantic three-day weekend music festivals and internet events featuring international DJs playing a huge range of music (mashups and much more) in one-hour sets, mostly done live. Organized by mashup impresario and Crumplebangers-founder Pom Deter (who also manages his own in-house Crumple-themed clothing line), all of the Crumplstock shows were huge fun. Highly diverse sets by numerous DJs from around the world, many of whom I'm proud to call friends, great banter on the chat channels, and the all-around joyful vibe made these festivals massively rewarding. These were my sets...

Crumplstock 1 (April 24-26, 2015).

My set was on April 25, 2015, 10PM (UTC+1). It was basically a showcase of my own mashups from the previous years, but done live. I even dropped my two "Smells Like..." boots because a latecomer requested the Futurama one. I also included a J.J. Cale cover of ours at the end (by Empty O).

Crumplstock 2 (September, 2015):

This live set of mine featured lots of demos of my (to date, still unreleased) mashups and songs by my bands (Empty O, Expedient Means, and with rapper, Chicorama). This was kind of a "sneak peak" at some things to come and I enjoyed putting more of our original stuff and covers out there.

Crumplstock 3 (January 22-24, 2016):

Another not-I mashup showcase presented on Jan. 22 at 11PM UTC, featuring tunes from my entire oeuvre. Doing it live, I was reacting to colleagues' and punters' feedback and attempted to keep it real to the best of my ability. It's very hip-hop-oriented at the beginning, but gradually turns into (methinks) an awesome electro-ethnic soundclash.

For Crumplstock 3, I did another set on Sunday, Jan. 24 (first show of the day at 1PM UTC). Like the Crumplbury aftershow this was just me as a DJ, playing a bunch of tunes I like, with only a few of my mashups, and giving proper respect to the recently-deceased artists, Alan Rickman, David Bowie, and Lemmy. But after having fallen asleep to the previous night's shows, my original live set turned out a bit hungover and dour. I recently expanded and improved it, with a nod to recently deceased greats, George Martin and Keith Emerson, but kept most of my original choices intact.

Much more stuff of mine up soon: new installments in the Collected Mashups series, new podcasts, and a master list with my complete works (featuring a torrent link!).
Cheers, enjoy, and keep on crumplebanging!

Live at Crumplebury 2015

Crumplebury 2015 was an international all-day online DJ festival organized by Pom Deter and broadcast live on mixlr.com. It showcased an accomplished team of DJs from Australia, Austria, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, and the US, most of whom have known each other since the heydays of a previous version of GYBO. The sets were highly eclectic, dropping anything and everything from breakbeats, drum & bass, electro, and techno to blues, jazz, and dub/reggae to indie, pop, rock, and metal.

Unsurprisingly, one of the festival's connecting threads was quality mashups (or, as they used to be called, bootlegs); the other was the crumplebanger ethic or (better) attitude/mindset of bending expectations, genres, and "rules" of music-making by just not giving a damn about them.

Crumplebury started on Jan. 31, 2015 at noon, British time (UTC+0) and ended on Feb. 1 at 6 AM. Amazingly, only one tune got played twice during the entire 18-hour event. It was truly a blast and I'm glad to have been a part of it. I did two sets, one at midnight and the other as the closing festival chill-out. Here they are. They're downloadable via the players. Love, not-I.

P.S. 1: You can check out all the individual DJ sets HERE or, if you have the time and courage, listen to or download the entire festival in one giant go:

Collected Mashups Vol. 2: The Videos

Following up on my last post, here are all the extant videos for Collected Mashups Vol. 2a and Vol. 2b (no videos have been produced for Vol. 2c). I made two of these myself, but most were made by people who liked my stuff enough to make fan videos and/or use them as soundtracks to whatever cool things they were doing, and were decent enough to credit them. To me, there is no greater compliment, and I have duly credited these video-makers.

All of the featured mashups are available for free download as part of the albums in the links above or individually via hearthis.at.

Enjoy & Have Fun! Love, DJ not-I

(P.S. My three recommendations are marked with *)

1.* Trans Planet Insomnia (Kraftwerk vs. Faithless vs. Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force) (Video by not-I)

Collected Mashups Vol. 1: The Videos

Following the release of volume three of the Collected Mashups series, and with volume four on the way, I thought this might be a good opportunity to post some video retrospectives, starting with the videos for volume one. Many of these were made by me, many were made by others, some of them have been blocked on Youtube in certain countries, and some of them are only available on Vimeo, all of which is duly noted below.

All of the original audio mashups are downloadable as part of the Collected Mashups Vol. 1 double-album or individually at hearthis.at. Now let's get this party started!

Collected Mashups Vol. 3b & 3c: The Shinobi & Enso Pop EPs

In addition to the mashup "singles" I released in 2008 (available here), I produced two special projects as mini-albums: The Shinobi EP and The Enso Pop EP. The former featured seven mashups utilizing instrumentals by artists signed to one of my favorite labels (Ninja Tune), while the latter demonstrated my ability to make (more-or-less) straight "pop mashups" whenever I felt like doing so. Despite having divergent intentions, I believe both EPs share a common thread or signature (in the music, not just the artwork) that makes you say, "These are DJ not-I mashups."

This is one of the reasons I've compiled both EPs as a single download in volumes 3b and 3c of the Collected Mashup Series. Enjoy!

Collected Mashups Vol. 2c: El Álbum Latino

This collection consists of single versions of all the mashups featured on not-i-podcast-02: la edición latina as well as a few Latin-themed bonus tracks. It is the last installment in Collected Mashups Vol. 2 (those made in 2007).

In accordance with the title and theme, much of the lyrical content is in Spanish, yet these juxtapositions are quite eclectic and roughly half of them mix English-language lyrics with Latin-flavored instrumentals - many of them include both languages. Hence, you don't have to speak Spanish to enjoy this album. In fact, I don't know much Spanish myself, but the highly melodic character of the Latina/Latino vocals featured here (including the reggaeton "rapping") suggested several fascinating combinations, which along with many of the tracks on Vol. 2a, marked my final departure from strictly hip-hop blends into truly melodic mashup territory.

In this collection you will hear top reggaeton artists like Tego Calderón or Voltio sing-song-rapping over jazz and dub reggae as well as Latin singers such as Don Omar, Notch, or Orquídea Negra of L.D.A. soaring over Jean-Michel Jarre and The Police. You will also hear underground rappers J3hst (UK) or The Perceptionists (US) spitting poison over slick-and-smooth-as-silk reggaeton instrumentals as well as Tweet waxing R&B-style over Santana and soul queen Jill Scott testifying over the Latin-heavy drums of Swizz Beatz. There is also a bit of The Simpsons en Español.

Variety is key here, yet regardless of genre, language or style, all of these mashups have a decidedly Latin flavor and, perhaps because of it, all of them are quite danceable. ¡Pásalo bien! Love, DJ not-I.

Archive Series Vol. IV: not-i-podcast-02 - La Edición Latina/Latin Edition

My second podcast ever, produced in 2007, "la edición latina" pays respects to my (grand-)mother's and my roots with an eclectic blend of Latin American and Latin-influenced music including hip-hop, reggaeton, Chicano rock, and muchos mash-ups* made especially for the show.

Bursting with spicy flavors from Mesoamerica and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean (especially from California, Mexico and Puerto Rico), and seasoned with ingredients from as far afield as New York and London, this sonic fiesta has satisfied diverse musical taste buds over the years and become one of my most popular podcast episodes.

This special edition has been re-rendered into highest-quality VBR mp3s from the original wave file and been cut into individual tracks so you can skip to and replay your favorite tracks. Choose a streaming and/or download option below.

Collected Mashups Vol. 2a: Year Of The Pig

The second volume of the Collected Mashups, this 2007 collection documents my expansive progression from the hip-hop-heavy blends of 2004-2006 to melodic/harmonic juxtapositions involving a wider array of genres, including electro, dream-pop, and dub/reggae.

Featuring "Trans Planet Insomnia," "Dr. C's Sexual Healing," "Dracula's 77 Nation Army," "F.E.A.R. Of Karma," and "Fool Of Mergen," as well as several long-unavailable tracks, this set is bound to please your ears.

In a departure from Vol. 1, I've abandoned chronology (exact release dates) and arranged the songs in listening order as a proper album. Enjoy! Love, ~I

Collected Mashups Vol. 1: MashAnthology (deluxe edition)

At long last, the first volume of the DJ not-I collected mashup retrospective series is finally available. As previously stated, with my semi-retirement from eight years of mashup-making to embark on original musical adventures, I'm releasing the entirety of my blend/bootleg/bastard-pop oeuvre in a series of mp3 albums, featuring all your favorite mashups of mine as well as special remixes, instrumentals, and previously unreleased tracks.

The journey begins here, with MashAnthology, a collection that ranges from my earliest efforts to some of my biggest "hits" made between 2004 and 2006. Though I released a previous version of this particular album, this is the definitive and deluxe edition which features several remixes, remasters, instrumentals and radio versions, many of them recently produced especially for the Collected Mashup series.

MashAnthology is all about "beginner's mind" (i.e. the initial thrill I found in juxtaposing various tunes, and the occasionally rough production values that went with it) and the utter eclecticism in the choice of sources, which was to become my trademark style. Although most of the tracks on this album use rap vocals, this is by no means a strictly hip-hop affair, and the compositions range from electronic to grunge to jazz to metal to pop to soul to world music. Rhythm is at center stage here, but my later emphasis on melody and harmony (or, as some of my mashup colleagues might say, my obsession with key) is clearly evident.

Enjoy and stay tuned for Collected Mashups Vol. II: The Sōhei Album, the majority of which will consist of previously-unreleased material!

Love, ~I
