Archive Series Vol. 5: not-I-podcast-03: GYBO Mixtape Edition

In the final days of the great GYBO website ("Get Your Bootleg On" version 5), the original hub and long-time host of mashups, bootlegs, bastard pop, and great banter before it was shut down by threats of corporate lawsuits), Jez of Celebrity Murder Party initiated a new challenge (after having kicked off the long-running GYBO Weekend Challenge, which was directly responsible for the mashups on my Challenger and Challenger II albums). This new challenge was to make an old-school mixtape as one side of 90-minute cassette (i.e. a 45-min. mix) of some of our favorite tunes.

This was my response (now available in a special edition < DOWNLOAD). Enjoy!

Archive Series Vol. III: not-I-podcast-01 - Premiere Hip-Hop Edition (special re-release)

This is a special re-release* of my first podcast, recorded back in 2007 (first released via Podomatic) and featuring quality hip-hop of the conscious, electronic, neo-old-school, non-commerical and underground varieties. It also includes three of my blends/mash-ups, all of which will re-appear on the imminent release of my Collected Mashups Vol. II.

This was mixed live with two turntables, one CD-player and a mixer from mostly vinyl sources. It being my first podcast, I naturally made a few beginner's mistakes, but listening again, I'm firmly convinced it stands the test of time, most especially because the music featured here more than adequately passes that test.

I call this a *special re-release because: 1.) It's been re-rendered into highest-quality VBR mp3s from the original wave file; and 2.) It's been cut into individual tracks so you can skip to and replay your favorite tracks.

Archive Series Vol. II: Unabashed Dance (mix/compilation)

This was my second DJ promo, produced in 2005, and it served its original purpose well by landing me some new gigs. It's all about worldbeat, breakbeats, and dancing unabashedly. With the exception of my mash-up at the end, it's purely vinyl (though even Shimmember Me used vinyl sources), and features a lot of remixes and white-label joints. You may find it to be an inspirational soundtrack for your own personal spring/summer transition, as I did when I first made it and am finding again now!

As in my last post, this mix is presented as a deluxe compilation-style CD-edition split into individual tracks, with artwork by Klaudia Gottwald and encoded into mp3 from the original .wav file at the highest possible variable bitrate.

Archive Series Vol. I: The Sonic Wok (mix/compilation, 2004)

After having made countless mixtapes on TDK SR-90 cassettes, this was my first real mix CD, produced as a DJ promo, and recorded live at Café Latte, Vienna, Austria, 21.VIII.2004.
An oldie but goodie, it not only lays out a nice and smooth (mostly) vinyl groove, but presents the first forceful manifestation of the eclectic not-I style.

In essence, it's a timeless world-music-spring/summer-chill-out mix with plenty of funk, soul and heart - not to mention "beginner's mind" as a gigging DJ. And I say "timeless" because after eight years, I find it still stands up to repeated listening. Perhaps you'll agree. Also includes my first two proto-mash-ups.
